Been seeing these posters around Guildford? You’re not the only one. Such propaganda, which features radical communist thinker Karl Marx in a WW1 – esque poster, has been left scattered around the streets of Guildford. The posters were created by a left-wing organisation called “Socialist Appeal”, on their website (https://socialist.net/). They describe themselves as a “a Marxist organisation fighting for socialist revolution, in Britain and internationally. “Join us in the struggle!” and feature large amounts of Socialist iconography and symbols such as sickle and hammers – a symbol iconic to the Soviet Union.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise, nationwide our country is becoming increasingly left leaning. Below, shows that according to any polling survey – Rishi Sunak – head of the Conservative government’s approval ratings are falling.

Additionally, latest polls from YouGov suggest that 44% of the UK intend to vote Labour with just 21% intending to vote Conservative (35% said they intended to vote for another party) and 8% intending to vote for the Green Party – another left-wing organisation. An exceptional difference from the Conservative’s landslide win in 2019.

The map on the left shows election results from the Guildford council elections – the left leaning Liberal Democrats won a majority of seats. There has been a sharp fall in the share of seats controlled by the Conservative party from its peak in 2015.

So why is the UK becoming more left leaning? It could be the cost of living crisis and rising inflation has caused a lack of trust between the general public and the Conservative government. Many blame the stagnating GDP on Brexit, and claim it was a mistake on the Conservative’s behalf.
