At the beginning of January in Las Vegas, Nevada, the annual Consumer Electronics Show took place. This is the biggest technology expo of the year, where all sorts of new devices are previewed. This year was no exception, with the likes of Samsung, LG and NVidia all taking centre stage. One trend which has risen in popularity over the past few years is AI. At CES 2024, this was by far the biggest sector at the event with both famous and less well-known companies launching their latest products based around AI. There were two stand-out showcases this year:

One of the most sought after products at this year’s event is a small device called Rabbit R1, which Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella heralds as one of the “most impressive” innovations since Steve Jobs’ launch of the iPhone 2G. The developers are calling it a “Large Action Model,” and it aims to replace virtual assistants completely. It is, potentially, a device for almost anything! Powered by rabbitOS, it has a small touchscreen, an analogue scroll wheel and a rolling camera which allow it to perform a vast array of different actions such as ordering a takeaway, playing some music or even controlling your smart home. The $199 R1 has become so popular that its 5th batch has already sold out.

Another impressive feat of engineering found at this year’s CES is the LG Signature OLED T. This TV is expected to go on sale in the second half of the year and is entirely transparent. One of its best features is the T-Bar. This is a small rectangular strip at the bottom of the TV which, whilst the rest of the screen remains transparent, can be used to display information of all sorts (such as news, the time and weather). The way it works is via a wireless box, named the “Zero Connect Box, which wirelessly projects video and audio to the screen. This could end up being a revolutionary step forward in the TV industry and could start a trend whereby other manufacturers also start releasing transparent screens.

All-in-all, CES 2024 was yet another successful year. Alongside the rabbit R1 and the LG Signature OLED T, there were other incredible showcased devices including Volkswagen’s IDA (incorporating ChatGPT); ASUS’s 3 pound dual screen laptop; Samsung’s Ballie Smart Home Robot and the Evie Smart Ring. One notable omission to CES 2024 was Apple. However, they have just released their inaugural XR Headset; Apple Vision Pro.
