This article is part of a series of manifestos released for the RGS 2024 Mock General Election. Mahil Vasanth, leader of the Green Party, outlines their plans for the future of the country.
“Environment. Economy. Energy” – Mahil Vasanth, leader of the RGS Greens.
Since the election announcement, we have seen the most harrowing prospective parliament in decades. The Conservative Party has ruined our economy, and our prospects, more dedicated to regressive and theoretical social policy than helping the everyday Brit, proposing national service and the Rwanda Plan which will prove costly and are misguided solutions to problems they perpetuate. The Labour part, although nominally dedicated to the working classes has shifted so far from this history, providing few policy proposals, and failing to commit to reversing the disastrous actions of the conservative leadership. The Green Party maintains a community dedication and a consistency not seen within any other party.
The Green Party will maintain and support every community, and the security and longevity of our country in the following key ways. Providing fair and green homes to every community, through investing not only in housing, but into green spaces and community resources to maintain healthy environments where people are provided for. Building a healthier country through investing in the NHS, a cornerstone of our country which accounts for so much good to this day, in spite of a crisis in funding and management. Revitalising the economy sustainably and fairly through taxation on those with the greatest means, to support small businesses and de-privatise the services to which every Brit owes so much. Powering up our nation with renewable and green energy sources to maintain energy security and our environment for coming generations. Making work places fairer by increasing minimum wage for all and decreasing taxes on small business. Giving better social support, increasing benefits and lifting children out of poverty. Bringing our nature back by setting out areas for special protection and enforcing new standards. Protecting our animals through genuine enforcement of animal protection laws in agriculture and elsewhere, including a ban on factory farming. Encouraging healthier food and diets, saving the NHS £6.5 billion annually, through free school meals for all children, and supporting British farmers. Making our streets safer and travel faster and for you, through discouraging short flights, and nationalising our public transport networks. Funding education for our future, by abolishing OFSTED, and putting funding into teachers’ pockets. Maintaining arts in our communities through continued funding of local arts and sports centres. Upholding the UK’s historic dedication to human rights and human dignity through passing sweeping voting reform and putting £2.5 billion into our courts to maintain fair and just prosecution. Supporting peace internationally though calling for an end on the violence at the hands of Israel and Hamas, and through signing UN treaties for peace which are yet unsigned. Promoting the wellbeing of all immigrants in the UK, and putting an end to the hostile practices which have come through systemic prejudice and negligence.
Why Not Reform UK?
Reform UK is built on the back of Enoch Powell, UKIP, and the English Defence League (EDL). They are yet to take any action to correct the systemic islamophobia and anti-immigrant sentiment which comprised their foundation. Reform does not have enough politicians, nor the will to successfully lead this country. They are and have been since their inception a private entity, raising over £1 million for their leaders. Reform are a single-issue party and company, which uses political outrage and vitriol to increase their bottom line.
Why Not Conservatives?
The Conservatives have ruined our economy, our trust in government and the NHS. They will be as such for as long as they maintain their streak of leaders who are more drawn to following their funding, and not the British people.
Why Not Labour?
The Labour Party, in wake of the antisemitic actions of their members, and the resulting removal of Jeremy Corbyn has been fractured and anaemic. The heads of the party have been consistently u-turning on key issues, including ditching their £28 million climate investment plan, and keeping the 2-child benefit cap, both of which were promised in their campaigns. The remaining policy they have is lacking a party which could support the decisions, and lacks policy which would help the average Brit in these trying times.
At this point we would discuss policy, but we couldn’t find any within the Labour manifesto.
Why Not Liberal Democrats?
The Lib Dems are confused, in policy, in identity, and in their place in British politics. The Lib Dems are a front, a party which has pledged allegiance to the Tories consistently. Their policy is lacking, and their ideology is confused and non-specific.
