Studying at home can sometimes be difficult for us at the RGS. There are always distractions, from phones to family, and it can be hard to focus. Many RGS students find it easier to work in Guildford, where there are plenty of places to concentrate. From the Guildford Institute to the library, there are options for everyone.

The Guildford Institute is a popular choice. Students can hire a small room and split the cost with friends, which makes it affordable. A 6th form student said, “Me and four friends hire a room sometimes. It’s nice because we can all work together, but we’re not distracting each other. Plus, it’s cheaper than going somewhere else.” The space feels private enough to focus but still comfortable, and it gives students the chance to work in a group without losing concentration.

The Guildford library is another well-used spot. It is quiet, has plenty of study desks, and access to books and computers. Another L6 student said, “I go there when I really need to concentrate. No one is talking, and I can get through my work without checking my phone every few minutes.” Libraries are perfect for serious work, revision, or research. However, some students say it can feel formal, and the atmosphere is not as relaxed as a room at the Guildford Institute.

Some students prefer to study outside. Parks like Stoke Park or areas along the river are peaceful places to work, especially in good weather. “I like sitting by the river to do my homework,” one student said. “It feels calm, and it doesn’t feel as stressful as working at home.” Outdoor spots can make studying more enjoyable, though they are not always practical. Noise, bad weather, or passing people can make it difficult to focus at times.

Other students combine these options depending on what they need. Some might go to the Guildford Institute for a few hours of group work, then head to the library to finish revision. Others might take advantage of the parks when the weather is good, getting fresh air while completing smaller tasks. The key is finding a place that works for the individual.

Guildford offers a variety of environments that support different ways of studying. Cafés and shops can be good for short bursts of work, the Institute provides private group space (maybe for MFL speaking practice) , the library offers peace and resources, and outdoor areas allow for calm and relaxation. Each option has its benefits and limitations, and students often choose based on what suits them at the time.

Overall, knowing where to study in Guildford can make a big difference. For many RGS students, it is not just about completing homework, but about finding a space where they can focus, work efficiently, and feel comfortable. Whether it is inside with friends, surrounded by books, or outside in the fresh air, Guildford provides plenty of spots to help students get work done.
