Project Hail Mary stands out among the best received sci-fi films in recent times due to its entertaining combination of science, humour, and a compelling emotional story. It tells the story of astronaut Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, who wakes up alone in space with no knowledge of who he is and why he’s there. Gradually, as his memories start coming back to him, Grace remembers that he was sent into space on a mission to save planet Earth from a major catastrophe. Although the plot may seem complex, the film manages to explain everything succinctly without being boring to the viewer.
One of the greatest strengths of the film is Ryan Gosling’s excellent performance. Unlike other films, where main characters are portrayed as ideal action heroes, Grace is portrayed as an ordinary person: he’s often frightened and puzzled, making him more relatable for the audience.
Moreover, the visuals in the film were stunning – the scenes such as the fishing scene are visually pleasing, where the viewer is presented with a kaleidoscope of colours. Even though there are a few action moments in the film, they aren’t the main focus of it.
The film was a faithful adaptation of Andy Weir’s original novel – much of the dialogue, humour, and science were unchanged – which was amazing news for fans of the book like me. The optimistic nature of the novel was also perfectly preserved. Nonetheless, there are several differences: the book explains Grace’s inner feelings and the science in far greater detail. Unfortunately, some scenes were simplified or completely omitted to accelerate the pace. Despite these differences, in my opinion, the adaptation remains highly faithful to the original book.
On the whole, I think that Project Hail Mary is an entertaining sci-fi film. It combines action, humour, and emotion will definitely appeal to both those who liked the novel like me as well as for viewers who do not know anything about the plot.
